Istanbul Commodity Exchange President Ali Kopuz made a speech at the İSTİB's Assembly meeting in June and stated that the the coronavirus epidemic caused changes in many areas from social life to shopping habits, “The Coronavirus epidemic, which the whole world has been struggling with for some time, has also begun to quickly transform the food and retail industry,” he said.

Drawing attention to the fact that electronic commerce has reached the expected level in a few months, Ali Kopuz said: “In particular, the information from the retail industry breaks all our prejudices down. Various studies show that there is an increase of up to 200 percent in online food shopping. Moreover, this increase did not only occur when people who had previously made internet purchases increased their shopping. According to the information provided by the Interbank Card Center, 5 million credit cards, which were not used once in online shopping, were used for internet shopping in this period. This data shows that 5 million people are new to internet shopping. These consumers, who met the internet for the first time, will probably continue to enjoy the convenience and advantages of the internet when the outbreak ends. The share of the internet reached %24 in shopping with credit cards only in March and April. In other words, 1 lira of every 4 lira shopping made with a credit card was made from the internet.

This figure is the most important indicator of the record increase of the internet share… ” Stating that the change happened in a way that industry professionals did not expect, President Ali Kopuz said, “Our prejudice, which we previously stated as“ Customer does not buy food without touching it, ”was destroyed in this process. Market and food payments made with cards on the internet tripled the same period last year. All this is proof that we are in an early revolution under the influence of the epidemic. It is an indication that our shopping habits will change even earlier than expected. ”
